The Taj Mahal is one of the most widely recognized mausoleums of the world. Construction began in 1632, by Emperor Shah Jahan for his third wife. This lovely model is of white soapstone, to mimic the white marble of the building and complex itself. The base of the model is six inches square, and the top tower stands just under ten inches tall. Taj Mahal is regarded by many as the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Islamic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish and Indian architectural styles.
